Gemba Walks
Gemba Walks is a Lean practice that enables managers and leaders to step out of the office and into the real workplace—known as “Gemba,” the place where value is created. In Japanese, “Gemba” means “the actual place,” referring to the production floor or the site where the work happens. The purpose is to observe firsthand, communicate directly with employees, and identify improvement opportunities by recognizing problems at their source. During Gemba Walks, no data is collected and no problems are solved on the spot—only observation and understanding take place. Gemba Walks enhance employee engagement, strengthen leadership skills, and become a key driver of continuous improvement. Where there is observation, there is insight—and where there is insight, sustainable success follows.
- Real issues are identified through on-site observation.
- Leaders communicate directly with employees.
- Processes are evaluated based on practice, not theory.
- New opportunities for continuous improvement are discovered.
- Employee motivation and involvement increase.
- Leadership becomes more effective and human-centered.
